- HVAC, BMS, Projects & Installation
Key Challenges
- Selecting a new chiller that could fit within the existing infrastructure while meeting the site’s cooling requirements.
- Ensuring the new equipment was appropriately sized without unnecessary oversizing.
- Minimising downtime while the HQ Tavern continued to operate and host events.
Outcomes

Achieved required cooling performance with appropriate equipment sizing
Minimised downtime in a live operational environment
The Client
The Victorian Racing Club (VRC) is one of Australia’s most prominent racing organisations and the custodian of Flemington Racecourse, home of the Melbourne Cup. The Club plays an important role in delivering major racing, hospitality and entertainment events, welcoming large numbers of patrons throughout the year.
With its strong heritage and high-profile position within Australian racing, the VRC operates a significant portfolio of venues and facilities that support both day-to-day operations and major event periods.
AE Smith has maintained a long-standing relationship with Victorian racing clubs, providing mechanical services over many years.
What we achieved with our customer
The project focused on replacing the ageing air-cooled chiller serving the VRC’s HQ Tavern with a new high-efficiency unit. The replacement needed to deliver the required cooling capacity while remaining compatible with the venue’s existing infrastructure and avoiding unnecessary oversizing.
AE Smith also integrated the new chiller with the existing Building Management System (BMS), ensuring the equipment worked effectively with the site’s established building systems.
As the HQ Tavern remained operational and continued to support events throughout the works, minimising disruption was a key consideration. The replacement was carefully planned and delivered to maintain operational continuity and reduce downtime wherever possible.
The project was completed successfully, with the new chiller achieving the required cooling performance, appropriate equipment sizing and successful BMS integration. The VRC was very pleased with the outcome.
