Powering the Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix: Nuvo’s 30-Year Partnership

23 March 2026

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA.

The Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix once again brought world-class motorsport to Melbourne, with Albert Park transforming into a global stage for the opening race of the season. Behind the scenes, Nuvo Group continued its nearly 30-year partnership with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC), delivering the electrical and communications infrastructure that powers the event.

For almost three decades, Nuvo has played a critical role in transforming Albert Park from a public space into a fully operational international race circuit. Each year, this temporary venue requires a complete overlay of electrical, communications and distribution systems—delivered within a tightly controlled program and dismantled over a six-week period following the event.

The Scale of the Australian Grand Prix

  • Over 400,000 fans attend across race weekend
  • 10 teams, 20 drivers competing at the highest level of motorsport
  • A 5.2km street circuit built and removed each year
  • Broadcast to hundreds of millions globally

Just as every component of a Formula 1 car is engineered for performance, every element of the Grand Prix infrastructure must operate seamlessly—because when the lights go out, there is no margin for error.

A Thrilling Start to the Season

The 2026 Australian Grand Prix delivered a dramatic start to the Formula 1 season. Mercedes driver George Russell claimed victory at Albert Park, leading teammate Kimi Antonelli home in second, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium.

Across 58 laps, the race featured intense competition, strategic battles and multiple safety car periods, with packed grandstands and global broadcast coverage once again reinforcing Melbourne’s reputation as one of Formula 1’s most iconic events.

Delivering Infrastructure at Scale

Behind the spectacle is a highly coordinated infrastructure program—where precision, timing and reliability are as critical as they are on the track.

A 12-week construction program leads into race weekend, delivered with the same level of sequencing and coordination seen in a Formula 1 pit crew. During this period, Nuvo deploys more than 30 technicians on site, supported by dedicated site managers across electrical and communications, alongside project management and administration teams.

The scale of delivery reflects the demands of a global event:

  • Over 12,500 endpoints connected, powering everything from team garages to broadcast and event operations
  • Approximately 300 generators installed and integrated, alongside mains power connections to ensure redundancy and reliability
  • Full electrical distribution supporting lighting, hospitality, signage, race operations and critical infrastructure systems

During race weekend, a team of 20 technicians remains on standby—responding in real time through a central Command Post, much like a race team managing performance from the pit wall.

Continuous Evolution of the Circuit

Each year, the circuit evolves to enhance both performance and experience.

In 2026, a major addition included the installation of a new overpass structure (OP1). Replacing a previous single overpass, the upgraded structure incorporates six carriages and four passenger lifts—significantly improving accessibility and pedestrian movement across the site. This formed part of a broader variation to the delivery scope, reflecting the ongoing development of the event.

From Build to Pack Down

While the race itself spans just a weekend, the delivery lifecycle extends well beyond.

Pack-down begins immediately following the final race on Sunday evening, with decommissioning and removal of infrastructure taking approximately six weeks. This marks the final phase in a highly complex program that transforms the park from public space to global event precinct—and back again.

Precision Behind the Performance

Nuvo’s experience spans some of Victoria’s most recognised venues, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Crown Melbourne and Flemington Racecourse—environments where precision, reliability and coordination are critical.

That same discipline is essential at the Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix.

While the race is measured in milliseconds, delivering the event takes months of planning and coordination—where every detail must perform exactly as intended, with no room for error.

Nuvo is proud to support one of Australia’s most recognised international sporting events—ensuring the infrastructure behind the scenes performs flawlessly, so the focus stays exactly where it belongs: on the race.

An outstanding effort by the entire team, led by Josh Ellmer and Brad Cotter, delivering with precision, coordination and reliability.
