AE Smith Apprentice Honoured in TAFE Queensland’s Apprentice of the Year Awards

04 November 2025

AE Smith is proud to announce that our plumbing apprentice, Lachlan Morton was nominated for TAFE Queensland’s Apprentice of the Year Award — a recognition that celebrates dedication, craftsmanship, and the next generation of trade professionals.

Nominated by his TAFE teachers, Lachlan’s recognition reflects his hard work, technical skill, and passion for plumbing. Over the past year and a half with AE Smith, he has embraced a diverse range of challenges — from installation work and plumbing upgrades to maintenance projects for Defence and QBuild — always approaching each task with professionalism and a willingness to learn.

Now in the final year of his apprenticeship, Lachlan continues to refine his expertise under the guidance of Jaymie Dunlop and our skilled team — William Blake, Harrison Meloni, and Keegan Meloni. His growth has been driven by a strong work ethic, curiosity, and a genuine commitment to quality.

Hear from our talented apprentice as he transitions into a technician:

“I joined AE Smith as a third-year apprentice, and while it was a bit of a change at first, it quickly grew on me. The team here is fantastic — they make learning easier and more enjoyable. You’re encouraged to give things a go, and mistakes are seen as part of the process, which really builds your confidence. Now, in my final week as an apprentice, I’m excited to continue working with the team and contribute to the company’s success.”
– Lachlan Morton

TAFE Queensland’s Apprentice Awards recognise apprentices and trainees who exemplify excellence in their fields and contribute to the strength of Queensland’s trade industries. Lachlan’s nomination is a testament to himself and AE Smith’s ongoing commitment to developing skilled tradespeople who will help shape the future of our industry.

“We’re incredibly proud of Lachlan’s nomination and the dedication he shows every day,” said Dylan Johnson. “His enthusiasm for the trade and willingness to learn reflect the values we uphold across our team.”

The broader Townsville Trade Excellence Awards also saw Anne-Marie Dowling named Outstanding Apprentice of the Year, rounding out an inspiring celebration of Queensland’s remarkable trade talent.

Congratulations, Lachlan — your hard work, growth, and drive make us proud. At AE Smith, apprentices like you represent the future of our trade, ensuring our industry continues to thrive for years to come.
