The Client

Telstra is the nation’s largest provider of mobile and broadband services, playing a pivotal role in connecting Australians through its expansive network infrastructure. The company supports essential services across government, business, and personal communications.

The Waymouth Street building in Adelaide is a key facility within Telstra’s portfolio. As a live operational hub, it supports vital telecommunications functions, making uninterrupted service a non-negotiable requirement during any works. AE Smith’s trusted partnership with Telstra—developed over numerous successful infrastructure projects—positioned the team as a reliable delivery partner for this critical facade upgrade.

What we achieved with our Customer

The project involved replacing the building’s deteriorating concrete façade, which had become a significant safety hazard for both Telstra employees and the public. AE Smith delivered a complete removal and upgrade to a compliant, non-combustible Apolic NC cladding system—all while the facility remained fully operational.

To overcome the logistical complexity of working in a constrained CBD location, AE Smith implemented a highly coordinated delivery strategy. Prefabricated cladding was manufactured off-site to minimise disruption and reduce the need for extended laydown areas. This strategy also allowed for a more controlled and precise installation, contributing to improved visual outcomes.

A key challenge involved maintaining telecommunications continuity while relocating mobile antennas during the façade replacement. AE Smith developed a detailed installation program that minimised antenna outages and ensured uninterrupted service. This was the first known Telstra project to combine full façade works with live antenna relocation—setting a precedent for future upgrades.

Throughout construction, AE Smith prioritised public and worker safety by coordinating site activities around pedestrian traffic and city operations. Despite the scope and complexity, the project was delivered without major disruptions or safety incidents, and with overwhelmingly positive feedback from Telstra.
