Project
Major Mechanical Services Installation – LNG Industrial Facility
Key Challenges
-
Working on Barrow Island, a Class A Nature Reserve, under the highest level of quarantine and biosecurity controls
-
Establishing a separate logistics and quarantine management facility, requiring a dedicated team
-
Meeting extremely high safety and compliance standards at an operational LNG gas plant
-
Delivering works under FIFO (fly-in fly-out) conditions across a multi-year program
Outcomes
Delivered $50M mechanical services scope across five operational buildings
Managed quarantine and logistics on a Class A Nature Reserve
Installed redundant systems to ensure uninterrupted service in critical facilities
The Client
The Gorgon Project, operated by Chevron Australia with joint venture partners, is one of the world’s largest natural gas developments. Located on Barrow Island, a Class A Nature Reserve, the $54 billion project includes a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, domestic gas plant, and associated infrastructure. The project is significant for both its scale and its stringent environmental controls, designed to minimise impact on the pristine island ecosystem.
John Holland served as builder, with Peter Hunt Architects, Aecom, and Wood & Grieve Engineers providing design and consultancy services. Envar was contracted to deliver the complete mechanical services scope across key operational facilities, supporting the safe and efficient functioning of the LNG plant.
What we achieved with our customer
Envar delivered a $50M mechanical services scope for five critical operational buildings within the Gorgon LNG development. The facilities – including an operations centre, laboratory, warehouse, workshop, and fire station – were each fitted with advanced mechanical systems designed with redundancy, ensuring uninterrupted service for safety-critical and mission-essential operations.
The project’s location on Barrow Island required Envar to establish its own quarantine and logistics framework. A separate facility and management team were created to oversee equipment, personnel, and material transfers, meeting the island’s stringent biosecurity requirements. This approach was crucial to protecting the sensitive environment while enabling construction to proceed.
Operating within the context of a live LNG plant, Envar delivered systems that complied with some of the highest engineering and safety standards in the industry. The project was executed over a five-year period, with Envar’s workforce operating on FIFO rosters to maintain consistent delivery and progress.
Through careful planning, strict compliance management, and robust engineering solutions, Envar successfully completed the works to the satisfaction of John Holland, Chevron, and all project stakeholders.
